Floats

Which one are you?

The Floater.
After gently pouring a nice tall glass 1/2 of the way with your choice of soda you ever so tenderly plop a couple scoops of vanilla ice cream into you glass so that the ice cream floats.

The Pourer.
You generously ladle vanilla ice cream into your wide mouth jar and gingerly trickle the soda over the ice cream.  Being careful to not get to much fizz because that would hinder the amount of soda that goes in.

The Indifferent.
It really does not matter to you.  You do not see the science in it at all, you just want the float already!

Everyone falls into one of these categories if you make floats.  And there is a science to it.  We love floats at our house.  They are somewhat quick and easy depending on how slow you trickle.  They are affordable.  They are great for company dinner and sleepovers.  They combine the best of two worlds.  Soda and ice cream and the possibilities are endless...

Chocolate ice cream & root beer
Chocolate ice cream & cream soda
Chocolate ice cream & strawberry Nehi
Vanilla ice cream & cream soda
Vanilla ice cream & root beer
Vanilla ice cream & peach Nehi
Vanilla ice cream & orange cream soda
Strawberry ice cream & cream soda

Not to mention Neapolitan, butter pecan, sherbet, coffee and mint ice cream combos.
Oh, and all the liquid possibilities like ginger ale, apple cider, iced coffee just to get you started.

This time our choice was chocolate ice cream and cream soda!

  1. I think I am going to pout because now I really, really, reallllllly want an ice cream float and it's YOUR fault, lol!

I pour just a couple of inches into the bottom and then I add a couple of scoops. Then I add more ice cream and pour more pop. So I think I'm a pourer, lol!

Thanks so much for linking up to the "Making Your Home Sing" linky party today! :)

  2. I am a pourer but after seeing your pics I think that floaters have more soda! So I might need to change my strategy!
And I love it with Birch Beer (tastes kinda like Root Beer)and Breyer's natural vanilla. My mom got me started on the Birch Beer, it is sold by her home at the German Baptist Flour Barrel where I stock up on my flour! (fyi- 10lbs of flour for $4.50 and it is better...way better than what I buy in the supermarkets...buy bread flour, pastry flour, gluten free flours...all for such a low price!)
    Anyway...I digress....floats, LOVE THEM!!!

  3. I am a floater. Another benefit of being one is that some of the ice cream is untouched by the soda so it leaves a nice crust where the soda stops. Thanks for the comments! Keep 'em coming!

  4. Hmmm...it has been probably 30 years since I had a float. Rootbeer. But making them for others I put the icecream on top. Now I may just have to have one...

    1. I have to admit until you "remember" them they are not something you just think of for dessert. Usually it is a pie, cake or cookie.

  5. I am also a pourer! I love flats, but haven't had one in quite awhile. We've always just done root beer or coke with vanilla ice-cream but I love your other suggestions. Especially the coffee idea...I am so going to have to experiment!
