Environmental Working Group

Yesterday we talked about Chemical Free Cleaning.  Click here to read that post.

Let me introduce you to Environmental Working Group.

The Environmental Working Group is the nation’s leading environmental health research and advocacy organization. Our mission is to serve as a watchdog to see that Americans get straight facts, unfiltered and unspun, so they can make healthier choices and enjoy a cleaner environment. We use the power of information to create cutting-edge research and advocacy that transform government policies and the marketplace in order to conserve land and water, produce and use energy responsibly and ensure that food and consumer products are free of harmful chemicals. We investigate government subsidies that encourage wasteful practices, and we support policies that promote thoughtful stewardship of our land and natural resources. With your help -- and with the help of hundreds of organizations with whom we partner -- we are creating a healthier and cleaner environment for the next generation and beyond.

Visit them.  Look around.  They rate products like cosmetics, food, GMO's, energy, and cleaning products.  Which is what we are going to walk through today.  There is even a video explaining a research project they did involving babies who were tested with as many as 300 industrial chemicals.  Babies were pre-born polluted!

They give cleaning products grades.  A -F just like in school!
A = few/no known health hazards
B = low concern, limited potential
C = moderate concern, some health hazard potential
D = high concern, likely concern to health and environment
F = highest concern, potentially significant hazards to health and environment

What are the top 5 most popular cleaning products out there?  According to the highly read RealSimple magazine these are some of them.
1.  Fantastik Antibacterial All-Purpose Cleaner    F listing asthma/respiratory, skin irritation concerns.
2.  Better Life What-Ever claims no scent, dye or ammonia  C asthma/ resp., skin irritation concerns as well as environment.

3.  J.R. Watkins wipes C same concerns with nervous system effects as a concern .

4.  Pledge Multi Surface Everyday Wipes  F along with the above concerns there are also high concerns for development and reproductive as well as cancer concerns.

5.  Green Works all purpose cleaner (notice they even say green) F some concern in all areas from a labeled green cleaner!  Shame on them!

Take inventory of your cleaning products.  Look up each one and if it is rated a D or F throw it out!

As a matter of fact I have to confess to you that I ASSUMED Seventh Generation dish soap and cleaner were good.  They BOTH were given a C.  I am just not okay knowing that.  So now I need to find a replacement.  Based on the grade A the best choice would be Eco-Me Suzy.  Amazon carries it but you have to pay for shipping.  If you buy from the company Swanson Health, using this link you can get $5 off your first order.  Plus they have a flat rate shipping and free shipping if you spend $50.
